Thai meat and food producers optimize energy and water utilization to tackle climate change

Charoen Pokphand Foods PLC (CP Foods), Thailand’s leading Agro-industrial conglomerate, strongly implements practices to reduce water and energy use in its production line aims to eliminate climate change impacts, under which more than 100 energy management projects had been launched.

Mr. Suchart Wiriya-apha, Senior Vice President for Safety Health Environment and Energy (SHE & En) of CP Foods, said that the company’s commitment on environment sustainability is based on reduction and optimization of energy and water consumption. It has implemented the use of biomass, water and waste at all sites to reduce the amount of water it uses amid global concerns that industries, including agriculture, use too much.

CP Food has also set its 5-year strategic goal (2015-2020) to encourage all businesses to carry out activities and create innovation. It strategies has been drawn by considering environmental impacts and balance of profitable growth and excellence operation in response to UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

By 2020, the company aims to reduce greenhouse gas emission per production unit by 5%, water use per production unit by 10%, and waste per production unit by 30% compared to the base year 2015. CPF SHE & En standard also implemented to all manufacturing plants overseas in 16 countries this year.

Mr.Suchart added that the company has engaged on environment sustainability by operating its business efficiently in an environmentally friendly manner. It also launched 4Rs principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Replenishment) throughout its processing lines to reduce environmental impacts. The energy saving commitment has complied with not only laws, regulations in Thailand but also international standards including ISO 14001, ISO 50001 and OHSAS 18001 as well as Global Water Tool, Local Water Too and GHG Reporting.

Through all of the energy optimizations put in place by farms, feed mills and processing plants involved the use of renewable energy, management and value creation of waste throughout the process as well as reduction of resource use in packaging in order to reduce greenhouse emission which is cause of climate change.

In 2016, there were 104 new projects which helped reduce energy and greenhouse gas emission for more than 80,000 gigajoules and 7,200 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents respectively which  save cost for more than THB 50.6 million (equivalent to USD 1.5 million), save  7% water consumption per unit of production and reduce 17% of disposal waste to landfill.

Example of project success like installing PVC curtain wall (ISOWALL) to replace old piece of PVC wall in broiler farms to maximize the efficiency of the ventilation system and properly control temperature inside the farm which enhance rate of FCR of chicken, lower chicken loss, save up to 8% electricity and reduce water usage in the farm to 6,300 cubic meter a year.

CPF has collaborated with Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization to registered and certified Low Emission Support Scheme to reduce greenhouse gas emission in the operations.

Up until now, a total of 169 factories and farms that were registered in the LESS project already helped the company reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 739,734 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents and absorb 30,147 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents./
