Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CP Foods) announced that 99.9% of the company’s plastic packaging for food products in Thailand can be reusable or recyclable or compostable. The company expects to reach 100% sustainable packaging goal by 2025 for Thai businesses and by 2030 for overseas businesses
Narerk Mangkeo, Executive Vice President at CP Foods said the company aims at finding sustainable solutions to maintain high food safety standard while keeping minimal environmental footprint. The company has placed importance upon research and development, to find more eco-friendly choices and also collaborating with partners to develop a take-back system to recycle used packaging.
“In line with our policy, CPF Sustainability in Action 2030, CP Foods has a commitment to achieve 100% of the company's plastic food packaging to be reusable or recyclable or upcyclable or compostable by 2025 for Thailand operations and by 2030 for international operations, “ Mr. Narerk said this commitment will also support UN Sustainable Development Goals.
CP Foods has applied “Circular Economy” and “Design for Recycle” principles in food packaging development to reduce resource used and adopt environmentally friendly materials such as mono-plastic material that is 100% Recyclable with products like Meat Zero”
It also promotes the use of recycled materials, such as egg trays that made of 80% recycled plastic, help reduce the use of new plastic by 820 tons per year.
CP Foods is the first company in Thailand to use plant-based Polylactic Acid (PLA) trays, which is a bioplastic made from natural renewable resources in chilled raw chicken and pork products.
In addition, CP Foods has advocated to find solutions in reducing plastic waste in the supply chain. In the feed production, the company has used Bulk Feed Tanks to replace the use of plastic sacks containing animal feed. This effort can reduce the total use of plastic by more than 16,000 tons, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 51,000 tons of CO2 equivalent. Meanwhile, the shrimp business started using the Q-Pass Tank to deliver shrimp to consumers in place of plastic bags.
At down steam level, CP Foods has also raised awareness among employees in the organization and the community participating in marine plastic clean. The company initiated the Restore the Ocean project this year in a bid to collaborate with the stakeholders - employees, local authorities, and communities- to reduce the amount of marine waste and dispose of waste properly according to the circular economy principle. This effort hereby to the CPF 2030 Sustainability in Action strategy.
The company's operations nationwide joined hands with communities to clean up coastal beaches and mangrove forests to raise awareness of the plastic waste problem among public.
Moreover, CP Foods cooperated with the Scholars of Sustainability Foundation (SOS) and GEPP Sa-Ard Company Limited ( GEPP) implemented the "Circular Meal, this meal changes the world" program for the 2nd year in a row, turning excess food (Surplus Food) into ready-to-eat meals for vulnerable people. So far, the program has served over 70,000 meals to children and residents in more than 85 Bangkok communities. Meanwhile, GEPP Sa-Ard took care of the recovering of plastic food packaging (Take back system) for recycling, in order to relieve communities from plastic waste.
