Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited, or CPF, has initiated the "Sharing Recycled Water Helps Farmers Fight Drought" program for over 20 years, aiming to assist farmers near the company's swine farms and layer farms in having sufficient water for their crops. This program is aligned with the Circular Economy principle, which helps Thai farmers in fighting the drought crisis and achieving good harvests. CPF's animal farms have installed a biogas system for manure management and energy conversion. The treated water is stored in ponds and reused for watering plants and cleaning inside the farms. The company realized the difficulties farmers face due to water scarcity during the dry season. As a result, the company’s swine farms in several areas around Thailand decided to share their treated water with nearby farmers to assist them in mitigating the impact of severe drought. Thai farmers rely on rain and natural water resources; however, sometimes they are affected by the lack of rain, which can ruin their crops.
The Chomthong swine farm, owned by CPF, in the Chomthong district of Chiang Mai province, as an example, has been sharing its recycled water since 2006 to assist farmers in the surrounding area who have been facing exceptional drought and a lack of water for their crops. The farm has consistently provided recycled water to farmers. Currently, 13 villagers are receiving recycled water from the Chomthong farm for their crops. After using recycled water from Chomthong Farm, farmers have witnessed a significant improvement in their yields, as the water contains nutrients similar to fertilizers. Mr. Suthep Atama added that plants using recycled water from swine farms are better than using chemical fertilizer. They help farmers reliant on water and reduce fertilizer costs. CPF's Prachinburi Swine Farm in Nadi District of Prachinburi province has been sharing recycled water from its biogas system with six farmers for over 15 years. Nimon Wongkaew stated that she has been using recycled water in her vegetable planting areas since 2013. She noticed that the crops grow faster and the yield increases.
She also confirms that she hasn't experienced drought in over 10 years. Nimon Wongkaew expresses her gratitude to CPF for sharing treated water with farmers, helping them grow crops sustainably. This approach exemplifies sustainable water management throughout the production chain, in accordance with the 3Rs principle: reducing the use of water (Reduce), reusing treated water (Reuse), and recycling water (Recycle). Currently, CPF has expanded this program to include the layer business. CPF adheres to the principles of the Circular Economy as a guideline for waste management within the production process, aiming to maximize resource efficiency. The company strives to reduce the amount of wastewater and retrieve treated water for other uses, benefiting both its operations and society.
