Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CP Foods) has been honored with the Supreme Winner award and the Gold Award in the Food and Beverage Packaging category at the 5th Thailand Plastics Awards 2024. The recognition came for the company's innovative 100% recycled plastic egg tray, made with 55% Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastic. This achievement underscores CP Foods' dedication to eco-friendly innovation and its commitment to promoting a circular economy.
Kitti Wangwiwatsilp, Director of Packaging Research & Development at CP Foods, explained that the egg tray is made from 100% recycled PET plastic, including 55% PCR material, which is derived from post-consumer plastics. This approach reduces plastic waste and minimizes the use of virgin resources in plastic production.
In addition to using eco-friendly materials, CP Foods has designed the packaging to be more easily recyclable by incorporating a paper label instead of a plastic sticker with adhesive. This helps reduce contamination and improves the efficiency of the recycling process.
Consumers can now purchase CP Foods' 100% recycled plastic egg trays at retailers nationwide without any price increase, encouraging greater public participation in reducing pollution and supporting sustainable resource use.
The recycled plastic packaging has been quality-checked and certified safe by external laboratories to ensure that the materials used do not affect the food's safety or quality.
"By using recycled plastic egg trays, we not only reduce plastic waste but also lower greenhouse gas emissions in the production process. Recycled materials have a lower carbon footprint than virgin plastic, allowing us to reduce carbon emissions by up to 29%," Kitti added.
The 5th Thailand Plastics Awards 2024 was organized by the Federation of Thai Industries in collaboration with the Thai Plastics Industries Association, the Plastics Institute of Thailand, the Pollution Control Department, and A-PLAS 2024. The event aims to promote product design based on circular economy principles, focusing on the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) to encourage businesses to reduce plastic pollution and develop value-added innovations in the plastics industry.
