Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CP Foods) has won the 3rd place in the Entrepreneur’s Transportation Packaging category at ThaiStar Packaging Awards 2022, held recently in Bangkok. CP Foods was honored for its “One-piece Stackable Shelf Ready Packaging” which demonstrates the company’s commitment to developing sustainable packaging by reducing paper usage of more than 40% compared to the previous design.
CP Foods’ Vice President Kitti Wangwiwatsilp said the packaging of Frozen “Flamin Chicken Tenders”was designed and developed to facilitate transportation and product display in accordance with “Design for Recycling” concept and the Circular Economy principle.
He explained that the company has identified four common pain points in regular display shipping cases, which include not being well recognized on the shelf, collapsing when stacking, being difficult to open and using too much paper.
As part of an open innovation model, CP Foods R&D team has collaborated with partners and suppliers to solve packaging issues. The packaging was reinvented with prominent graphic design and created a structure die-cut to provide ease of use while maintaining its strength when stacked on a shelf. This solution ensures that products are delivered to consumers in the best possible condition.
He added that CP Foods has set a goal of reducing 1,000 tons of paper and plastic used in food packaging by 2025. As a result, the new shelf ready packaging is redesigned from two-piece display case to one-piece display case, allowing CP Foods to save paper usage by 40% compared to the original packaging. This is equivalent to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 165.9 tons of carbon dioxide eq.
