Charoen Pokphand Foods PCL (CPF) has applied animal welfare principle under World Organization of Animal Health (OIE) of the European Union to its broiler business since 1989.
CPF’s is the first company outside EU to be certified Animal Welfare standard for broiler business that ensure food quality and food safety.
The Principle of Animal Welfare focusing mainly on Five Freedoms of Animals comprise;
1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst - by ready access to fresh water and diet to maintain health and vigor.
2. Freedom from Discomfort - by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease - by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
4. Freedom to Express Normal Behavior - by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind.
5. Freedom from Fear and Distress - by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
CPF has applied those all animal welfare principle in its farm, by preparing enough feed and water all time and provide space for convenience living of animals freely moving. There are veterinarian and husbandry for animal’s health check. Temperature and humidity in the farm have been controlled to ensure suit environment.
The transportation of animal should be handling by appropriate cage to comfort animals without harmful. When truck arrived processing plant, it should be parked at arranged areas for animal to rest comfortably. Those practices will be managed by CPF Poultry Welfare Officer.
Dr.Payungsak Somyanontanakul, DVM, said the Animal Welfare practices will ensure animal good health without diseases so that it is not necessary to use any medicine treatment, antibiotic and growth hormone. This help reduce risk from chemical residue. Moreover, the company also works under EU’s poultry standard throughout the supply chain.
“CPF is the first company in Thailand to operate Evaporative Cooling System or EVAP that allow us to control all farming factors to ensure animal good health and growing well. With quality meat, we will have good raw materials to deliver food safety products,” said Dr.Payunsak.
