Buncha Chaowarin, the Governor of Saraburi, presided over the Saraburi Sandbox and visited the booth of Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CP Foods) which demonstrated approaches to move operations towards Net-Zero greenhouse gas emissions. This includes responsible sourcing of raw materials, promoting the use of renewable energy such as biomass, bioenergy, and solar energy, and using technology, science, and innovation to develop food products that are good for both physical and mental health. Importantly, CP Foods focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout the value chain, aiming for Net-Zero. CP Foods is also the first food production company in the world to have its short-term and long-term goals approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
In the Saraburi Sandbox project, CP-Meiji, a joint venture of CP Foods, operates a project called "separating bottles - reducing waste" which adds value from waste materials. This project supports students, teachers, and communities to learn and understand waste management processes from sorting to proper recycling, reducing contamination and disposal by incineration. It has resulted in income from waste sales with over 5,000 households participating, targeting to sort at least 1 million items into the recycling process, and aims to expand to 10 waste bank projects by 2025 to support the development of a Net Zero Emission innovative urban ecosystem, driving the green industry with innovations and technology. This links the industrial, agricultural, and community sectors to push Saraburi as the first model city in Thailand to achieve Net-Zero greenhouse gas emissions.
Meanwhile, all CP Foods' facilities are committed to environmentally friendly business practices, supporting the organization's main goal of achieving Net-Zero by 2050. For example, in Saraburi Province, the terrestrial animal feed production facilities aim to become Low Carbon Factories. The Nong Khae and Tharkasem factories have implemented solar cells, switched to 100% LED lighting, developed animal feed products with carbon footprint reduction labels, and warm globe labels, and conducted projects to add value from waste generated during production. The Saraburi comprehensive chicken meat processing plant promotes the use of solar energy through water-saving Solar Floating cells, among others.
